The Acadian Riviera

Through the providence of dating, I ended up getting to see some of the French parts of New Brunswick, as well as eating some strange Fondue. Although I grew up here, I had never seen Buctouche or any of the surrounding towns. The are pastoral, quaint and very tiny. The area around Richibucto (which is about an hour from Moncton) was the destination, but the French kid and I stopped off at the half way point to see Buctouche and the boardwalk (ironically funded by Irving). It was pouring rain and cloudy, but still gorgeous. We drove from Buctouche through Rexton and Richibucto town out to the small surrounding villages of Ste Ignace, Ste Marie, Ste Charles and Ste Louis de Kent.

Leaving Buchtouche I think I saw the most beautiful cemetery ever. It was over-looking the Northumberland Strait, and Jesus was right in the middle.

According the the French kid we drove through the second longest covered bridge in North America - he wasn't sure where the first was located.

Most of the towns were of the one Main Street and no traffic light variety. Ste Marie was hilly and over-looked a river, populated with the requisite abandoned gas stations (which I love to photograph for some reason).

Later in the evening I got a real treat of moose meat and scallop fondue. The meat was cooked in boiling Teriyaki sauce with globs of cheese melted cheese that started out looking like giant curds of whey. Apparently this is an uber common meal in Quebec, maybe the French, unlike the uptight and time conscious English rather enjoy cooking each mouthful of food. Of course done over some laughs and a great bottle of wine!
Who knew? Teriyaki flavored moose meat with melted cheese! And for the record, I was a terrible and lazy cooking assistant to my little French kid. Next time. I promise.

Tarot Reading

I was going to go out tonight, but decided against it. Making the decision to stay home instead of painting the town red made me question if it was the right move. It's funny to see that indecision pop up on my tarot reading. Tarot cards make me panic ... I always get downer cards like the Hanged Man or the Devil. Today, I got this:
Love: The Star
Touchstone: The Lovers
Career: The Judgement
A crisis on the romantic front cannot be totally excluded today, dear. It could be that you have to make a choice between two partners, two different ways of spending the evening, or two different invitations. This, at least is what the Lovers and the Star suggest… and they’re not making it easy for you! To make matters worse, things are a little tense today, misunderstandings abound, and your own doubts are making everyone around you feel uncomfortable too. At work, exciting new developments are in store! Events are building up thick and fast: you need to make choices and take decisions but you’re standing open-mouthed, unable to utter a single authoritative statement. This inability to act is a result of the combined influence of Judgment and the Lovers – but it could cause you to miss a great opportunity. Get moving! - No kidding!

One Year Survival Rate

I moved to Moncton one year ago today. It's colder than last year, and starting to snow. I vowed I would never come back. But here I am. According to the Chinese Zodiac 2010 is the year of the Tiger (I know some Tiger's), and 2011 will be the year of the Rabbit; which will be bring good luck!

The Year of the Rabbit, begins on February 3, 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animals signs. The Rabbit is a lucky sign. Rabbits are private individuals and a bit introverted. People born in the Year of the Rabbit are reasonably friendly individuals who enjoy the company of a group of good friends. They are good teachers, counselors and communicators, but also need their own space.

I not a Rabbit, but a Pig ... still ... I will take some luck, please :)

In Macbeth Act 3 Scene 2 ...

... it is stated, "Things without remedy, should be without regard; what is done is done,"

That Time of Year Again

I moved back to Moncton the day before Halloween last year. Looking back, I can't believe what singularly bad shape I was in. It was an absolutely horrific time in so many ways that, for me, there are no words to describe just how rock bottom it all was. Funnily enough, I remember thinking that I had the wherewithall to go out for Halloween (I was going to dress up as Amy Winehouse) and knock 'em dead with my costume. What the hell? As it turned out, it was all could do to order a hamburger at A&W, buy a bottle of wine, and sit in the corner of my furnitureless apartment and cry. Last October, I was sure I would die. I felt that it was impossible to turn it all around. It wasn't impossible. I am turning it around. This October, things are different, and for that, I am eternally grateful to the powers that be. God Bless all who struggle.

Baked and Trapped.

It is so friggin' hot. The same crap happened every year in Seattle as well - its all cold and clammy for months on end (try like 9) - completely uncomfortable, my hands and feet continuously icy and cold and then - BOOM - its a 100 degrees. I have never been able to fully ajust to that switch in weather. I'm like, WTF?! Where did that effing hot ass wind come from? Arizona? California? I am not ready for it. I have no way to get to the beach, I'm broke, and well, it just seems not to be the time to celebrate with drinks on boats. And now after being on the verge of have full blown insomnia, I think I have been offically kicked over the edge of ever getting any normal sleep. Plus I was drinking wine and now I can't even take NyQuil. It doesn't help that I live above a bunch of ghetto Moncton morons that just hang around downstairs all day smoking cigarettes, lighting fire crackers, and swearing at passersby. I mean, people did warn me about Dominion St, but I thought really, c'mon, how bad could it be ... this is Moncton - so there are a handful of creepy streets. Big Deal. What level of ghetto-ness could actally exist here? Ha! If only I had known ...

This is when San Diego pops into my mind, as it does every year when the weather goes from unbearably clammy and cold to unbearably hot and humid. Either extreme I can never get anything done (althought weirdly I do like the tropics). Anyway, San Diego is the only place where it is PERPETUALLY 85 degrees. I exagerate of course ... but its close to that. And every year for the past 15 years, I have contemplated a move there, then I think "earthquake" - upon which I view myself dying in the "big one." I then let the thought go for another year, pour a glass of wine, stare at the wall and wonder if its just me ....

FIFA World Cup 2010

It's a draw! England v USA: (1-1), but I'll take it. That was the luckiest damn slide (or roll) into a goal I have ever seen (poor Green). Bravo Dempsey! It was a dumb way to score against the mighty England, but I don't care. Good on ya Yanks!!
